Cactus 4 Begins Construction on Clinton Street
Will the Fajitas Come Out Sizzlin’?
Local business gets a big win today in Iowa City as beloved franchise Cactus announces yet another location across from Burge Hall.
“Our main complaint has always been that we’re too far away from Northside,” franchise owner Gary White told us, “Right now we’re very downtown, but we’re trying to be more all-town.”
The new Cactus 4 is replacing the historic Delver House built in 1920, also known to the student populace as the “South Clinton Eyesore”. The Queen Anne-style home was the last work of famed Iowa City architect Mulligan House. The property housed orphans, hosted three US presidents (1st, 2nd, and 3rd-term FDR), served as a meeting place for Vietnam and Civil Rights protestors, survived three floods, successfully prevented two more, and was the birthplace of Herky. It was also regarded as, like, super ugly in a recent student poll, and a majority of students voted that they would like it more if it was a Chick-Fil-A.
In a recent state auction, after zero bids on the downtown highrises, the Delver House plot was sold to Cactus for 70,000 Dining Dollars. But, according to White, “this is only the beginning.”
“We have no intention of slowing down, nor of showing mercy. We’re hoping to start work on Cactus 5 by 2027,” White told our correspondent, “Location-wise, we’re thinking of either the Pappajohn Business Building lounge, Kurt Vonnegut’s house, or the liquor tunnels beneath Pagliai’s, but who knows. We might get all three.”
Per usual, west side is getting nothing. “You’ll have to wait for Cactus 8,” White says.
